Hooray! Jersey Tunic dress

I know it is roasting hot but I damn well traced and cut out those pesky pattern pieces and I wanted something to show for my patience.

Here is the 'Pigeon Grey' Tunic dress from Ottobre magazine. It was too long for me, down passed my knees, it made me look like a Ye Olde farm peasant so I cut it off and got a better jeans/boots/tunic length. (wearing my DM sandals today)

I have really enjoyed working with this thick Jersey and thought it would be a lot more difficult than it was. The pattern is great - no zip, fastenings, tricky bits just really well put together pattern pieces.

I used interfacing on the neck pieces and it was too thick so it made top stitching really difficult because the foot kept veering off the thickness of fabric. There is a lesson to learn in every garment. Look at that shoddy neckline... thank heavens I made the scarf as a practise piece to wear over the top of it.

I am going to put it under the bed for Autumn/Winter and then pull it out in late September with an exclamation of surprise that I forgot I had made it.

Settling into a bit more tracing this afternoon. Now, where are my glasses....

  2. Jo I think you made a fantastic job of this tunic and how lovely you look in it. Jo you are a real inspiration with your energy and your humour. Your tunic will serve you well in the coming months and years as it will be such a versatile option - I would love one in a rich velvet around Christmas time. When I get a little more experienced with sewing would love to have a go at this but I doubt I would manage the pattern very well unfortunately.
A wonderful post Jo - a big personal thanks for helping me with my blog, what would I do without you.
    Have a wonderful week ahead
    Lots of love

  7. Looks great Jo - and the scarf is a really fab touch. It might help with different thicknesses to try one of the following (if they're available on your machine) (a) adjust the pressure of your foot - some machines let you adjust this to cope with different thicknesses of fabric (b) see if your machine has the option for a 'walking foot'. It always the fabric to feed through top and bottom. They're not always particularly keep though.
Failing that trimming your seam allowances right down or even grading them can help to reduce the bulk.
Funnily - I seem to have my mind of autumn/winter sewing too!

    1. Thanks Louise. In all honesty if I had tested a few layers I would not have used any interfacing at all. But I will check out my instruction book - I have heard of a walking foot and I had lots free with the machine so I guess it is in there somewhere so will be trying your tips. Hope the holidays are treating you kindly! Jo x

  9. Oh Jo I love it! I don't suppose you still have details of the pattern? I shouldn't make any more clothes but it's always nice to know when a pattern works out well, and importantly doesn't have fastenings! :D

  10. How lovely - I did some autumn sewing in July one year and it was indeed a lovely thing to have an unexpected new wardrobe when September came!
