Red cardigans

My children are still at the age where a hand knit school cardigan is something they are happy to wear proudly and tell their friends all about. I know the day will come when there will be a refusal but I am in total denial about that at the moment so I gladly knit one each term.

This is made from Sirdar bamboo and is really silky to the touch so is ideal to wear with a short sleeved school dress.I got the back to match the fronts eventually! My favourite yarn to knit school wear from is Patons Smoothie. It washes over and over without going bobbly and dries quickly but looks like cotton. Between my mum and I we have amassed quite a few over the infant years.

This is for Big Sis in summer term, a cotton linen short sleeved, short body cardigan to wear over her school gingham dress. All she needs now is a longer skirt, that girl is growing fast. I might try something pleated.

Happy knitting. What is on your needles? Jo x

  2. There is no reason why the time has to come when your children won't want to wear what you make. If you make lovely things, that they liked why wouldn't they want to continue to wear them? We had a mum who made things, as well as a neighbour who knitted us lovely cardigans. We loved them very much at the time and retrospectively they make us very nostalgic. I think we only gave up having them made for us when we started to make things for ourselves. I remember a tiered skirt I made at 11-12 which was made on my mum's new machine. I didn't knit for myself though until an adult. Anyway a pretty cardigan is appreciated at whatever age and a handmade one is to be extra appreciated. We always knew that. The people who went on wearing clothes made for them were envied, definitely not ridiculed. I can remember 2 girls with fantastic wardrobes who were the envy of the class. One was 12 with many pretty clothes and the other was 17-18 and she always looked phenomenal in her clothes made by her aunt. There was lots of admiration!

  5. My 14 year old young adult has recently requested I make a copy of an orange and grey jumper he loved a lot when he was little. Growing up with handmade clothing is a privilege, don't you think? Your girls are little makers already and I bet they won't stop appreciating your and your mums talent! Mix it in with a little bit of Primark if need be :) Your cardigans are just lovely, not one the same as the other, beautiful! x

  6. The cardigans are beautiful! I think they came out so well. I wish my kids had school uniforms, I think it must make life a little easier. Your girls are lucky to have handmade uniform pieces!

  7. What a wonderful array of red cardigans - so much more stylish, more comfortable and hard-wearing than anything shop-bought. I've still got a picture of me at primary school with my hand-knitted grey cardigan - reminds me of how much my mum cared for us now that she is sadly no longer with us. Judy.

  8. Gorgeous cardis! Take full advantage before they turn into teenagers and refuse to wear anything you've even looked at, never mind hand made :-)

  9. Each and every one is so very beautiful! Teach them while they are young to learn the joy of knitting and then they'll be making their own scarves and accessories and clothes to make. :) Best wishes, Tammy

  10. My grandchildren are getting older but they still wear what I knit them. In fact, if they see I'm knitting something for someone else they feel sad! Your cardigans are awesome!!!

  11. They are all gorgeous, and i think you might be surprised at how much they love the sweaters you make. You are so gifted with the knitting needles and little girls love beautiful things, well big girls do too! I remember when my oldest son did not want me to make him Halloween costumes anymore, he wanted to be like everyone else. It broke my heart but then in the end I did not have to wrestle with a pirate costume or a vampire cape.

  12. My mom knit many sweaters for the girls in our family...gifts I appreciate even more in retrospect, but did love when the ones she made were for me. I hope your girls will always treasure what you and your mom are creating for them. I truly admire what you have shown us, Jo! [ In answer to your query, I am well and happy :) Thanks for asking! ] xx
