Creative Crochet

So I gave you a sneak preview a while back on a crochet project going on here at Three Stories High.

Big Sis had learnt to make granny squares and I helped her along to make a pile. There was no ending planned for this project. Then she suggested in her seven year old naive voice...

"I want to make my baby blanket from Auntie Di bigger now that I am bigger so I can use the tassels to tie on the squares can't I?" Awww. You can't stop a creative mind, it was an idea though even if it lacked knowledge. Now is the time I need to show this girl how to join squares together I thought.

Last weekend, in a flurry of activity, she measured along each side to see if she had enough. She took time to think about which colours to put next to each other. She was quite particular about that.

I taught her how to join squares with double crochet. Look at that concentration along with her own hold which she worked out herself. It is not the way I crochet. She pulls the ball yarn under her index finger to get tension.

We have all been enjoying crafting this month with the Summer being a bit of a non-starter. Little M is busy on a piece of Binca making her name and a heart in crazy yarn colours.

So here it is, I mean I wouldn't choose it myself but I love that she thinks she has made a blanket and that it was all her own idea.

Next she says she wants to add flowers to it so I will teach her some simple blossoms over Summer. I have a feeling this blanket will grow and grow just like my creative thinking girl.

Bit teary now. Jo xxx

  1. Oh WOW!!!!!!!!! How wonderful is that!!!!!!!!!! What a very creative and talented young lady your daughter is!!!!! That is fantastic!!!! I love the idea of the border around the big granny square, I think that is a great idea, she is very clever!!! Very good and very neat crochet too!!!! You know that I hold the yarn "all wrong" so I can appreciate that she holds it in a different way thank you too, that is so cute!!!! I am not surprised that you are a little teary, I am too! xx

  3. I think her blanket is stunning and she should be very proud of herself. Who knows if she keeps adding to it by the time she is a mummy herself she will be able to use with her own children now wouldn't that be something.

  5. Well I would choose it myself - I think the colours are lovely and for a 7 year old to come up with the idea is terrific. Also to have the tenacity to make all those squares at her age is no mean feat either. It was her own idea of putting squares around the edges, she just didn't have the technical knowhow. I think the blanket is much nicer now than before. If she wants to, she can add even more squares around the edges or even a bordered edge as she learns more about crochet. I think her idea of flowers is excellent too. She didn't make the original blanket but she has certainly enhanced it and added artistic merit to a plain blanket. Well done her. Fantastic for any age! I bet she will keep this blanket and think of it as the treasure it is.

  9. Big Sis is just a fab girl! I am not surprised though, it runs in the family. I do like her blanket very much. It looks much more fun now. I bet the flowers will add to the charm, too. I am utterly unsuccessful with my own children. Their creativity seems to be well hidden.... I do encourage each and every one of them, with intermittent success. x

  10. Brilliant. She is going to be a super crocheter when she grows up. The flowers are a good idea and she might like to add butterflies as well. I'm looking forward to seeing the end result.

  17. The blanket is gorgeous! She has done so well to be able to crochet the squares as well as join them. I have taught quite a few people to crochet and none of them end up doing it the same way.
