People often say to me why do you bother making clothes for your girls when you can buy them so cheaply? but to me sewing is easier than negotiating at the shops with two small children and ethically, I am not contributing to so much consumer waste.
In the Easter holiday week there was an ideal example. Bis Sis had grown out of her leggings - again. We bought three pairs at a cheap shop in a hurry because everyone was hungry and tired of shopping (we had already done sandals) but when we got home they were wrong, all wrong: legs just the right length, waist huge and bum too small. How can that be? How can a girls waist need to be bigger than her bottom!
I pulled out my trusty Ottobre magazine and traced off a pair of leggings. I made this top (same as the strawberry one) and leggings in ninety minutes. Perfectly fabulous with her dungaree skirt. As for the cost, they did not cost me a penny. It is leftover fabric from my last Bettine dress.
She loved me for it too which is always a bonus!

She looks gorgeous, the perfect make.
ReplyDeleteI'm not surprised that she is pleased. I make leggings for both my daughter's. The cheap ones don't last, I find. Also both girls are tall and willowy, so unlikely to find anythng that fits. I'm still trying to figure out the weird proportions of the leggings you bought. I don't think I know any child that shape.
ReplyDeleteAs one blessed by my mother's sewing skill, I am cheering on your efforts! The outfit in this post is lovely and practical. Happy Weekend to you and yours 🤗
ReplyDeleteShe loves you unconditionally any way, it's just such a bonus to have a mum that sews, knits, crochets, bakes, cooks, paints and has such a good knowledge of most things wildlife.
ReplyDeleteI have real trouble buying clothes for my boys. They are so skinny around the waist. THe extra kisses for me-mades make it worth the sewing. I do buy shop bought for character t-shirts extra kisses for those too!
ReplyDeleteShe looks fabulous in them and won't be wearing the same as everyone else so that is another bonus, well done. xx
ReplyDeleteI totally agree, we need to slow down clothes buying and not get tempted into the 'buy it now and only wear it 3 times before it's falling apart' type clothing. I say an adverts on the TV the other day for 3 T-shirts for £4, that can't be right? Who is paying the wages of the people who make that fabric & sew those garments?
ReplyDeleteThese leggings are lovely, and special because you made them. I bet they wash and wear really well too.
