Winter Vintage Pattern

It has been a long time since I have delved into my vintage pattern collection and I fancied a winter dress, something cosy, that I could wear to work. I have never made this pattern before but it looked perfect. When I say this, it looked perfect this time last year when I actually cut it out however, I never got around to sewing it up and then Spring arrived!

It is such a treat to have a dress all cut out in a bag with the zip, thread and darts already marked. I took about an hour and a half to sew up. The fabric is a thick ponte roma jersey from Abakhan and cost me £14 for a two metre piece. I knew I would be using it to make a retro winter dress so the pattern seemed ideal. Navy and green are my favourite colours.

Sewing with Ponte Roma is a great way to get started with sewing jersey because you can cut it with pinking shears and it does not fray. Also, there is a little stretch for fitting but nothing that causes problems under the sewing machine. The dress has a zip and raglan sleeves which means it is not a swinging sack. There is also further shaping with a combination of waist and bust darts. I moved the bust darts up a fraction.

Worn with navy tights and my green clogs I am the epitome of the phrase 'blue and green should never be seen...' but I love it.

Beano thought it was a good combo too!

It is indeed the dress I imagined in my head when I bought the fabric and it will be a winter keeper for a good few years to come. I wore it to work on Friday and it was super comfortable.

Thanks for dropping by. Jo xxxx

  1. Bluebells and any other flowers that are blue have green leaves and grow in green grass, (as well as green grass etc and blue sky) so that silly blue green thing is just really stupid. I believe they are also analgeous colours meaning that they go next to each other in the color wheel.

Ah yes, a useful internet quote to back me up.... "Analogous colours are groups of three colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel, such as blue, blue-green, and green, your blue-green mix should be an even mix of the two for a balanced look. ... Analogous colour schemes are often found in nature and are harmonious and pleasing to the eye"

Lovely dress, you really suit that style and yes a treat not to have to cut it out.

  2. Gorgeous! I love that simple pattern and style. I love navy, it goes with any colour. I love dresses too, though I don't sew. I have quite a few girls dresses by F&F. The slightly fitted, grown up style suits me. Best, Jane x

  4. Nice work. Great when you just have to do the sewing.I am making a top from a skirt that I didn't wear. I cut it out from the hem upwards. No hem to sew ! Also the back seam is already overlocked. Only shoulders and side seams to sew. Then chuck a bit of bias binding round the neck and armholes. Bet this turns out better than one I took time on. lol. Do you find that happens sometimes ? Your dress looks lovely.

  7. It is a super dress and the comfy ones are the best. I really don't get the blue and green shouldn't be seen bit as I pair them all the time too! Somebody just wanted the rhyme I think. x

  10. Smart yet comfortable - the holy grail!! I find myself choosing stretch fabrics more and more. The dress looks great, especially with those sandals.

  11. I really must start making my clothes again. You are so inspiring. I've never understood why blue and green supposedly don't go together. Many tartans and even school uniforms combine those colours. Carry on proving everyone wrong!
