Have you ever...

...thought your children were going back to school two days before they were supposed to? I did this week. I had so much to do on Monday, I was really looking forward to it before I went back to work myself on Tuesday. I was going to have a big clear up, plan my lessons, mark some GCSE papers, be on my own, not supply endless rounds of snacks or go to a little pop up play shop but there you are - I got it wrong!

Anyway they went under strict instructions to amuse themselves for an hour while I did some work on Monday: no craft kits, arguing or mithering were the three main instructions. I tried to plan my teaching lessons for this coming week. I could hear the microwave going from upstairs in the office but thought I was going to be in for a strange cup of luke warm tea.

But a sheepish Big Sis came up and said their 'cake in a mug' had gone a bit wrong. We all got one of these mugs from my neighbour for Christmas. Handily it has the recipe on the outside and it claims 'cake is only 3 minutes away'

After laughing and talking the recipe through it turns out they did not know some key baking knowledge namely:
  1. The abbreviations for spoon measurements
  2. What cinnamon looked like so they used cinnamon sugar
  3. How much oil to put in (spoon error)
  4. Forgot the banana so put it in at the end in chunks!
To impress me they 'fessed up to eating some chocolate chips straight from the packet before putting the rest in.

I know what you are thinking. Did I eat it? Of course I did!!!

  1. I would have eaten it if I had to prise my mouth open and push it in, just like the Vicar of Dibley with sprouts.

  2. The mug cake looks perfectly edible. My oldest has a thing for messing up the microwave, hot chocolates, flapjacks and scientific experiments (how long does it take to ignite a stick etc). Mine are back at school today, phew. I escaped to work yesterday, bliss. Have an enjoyable week. xx

  3. Hehe that is a shock when you had planned things. We did it the other way round and got a curt phone call form school to ask where we were?. We were having a lovely day out on a cold winters day. We enjoined that day so much though and laugh about it. But then comes the ' you fell asleep and forgot to pick me up' which of course I never remembered doing but I think it was just a good excuse that back fired.
Have a great week. Ours went monday.

  4. Not only did you have my in hysterics, but so did the comments above! At least they weren't cooking sticks like Christina has to deal with! You were obviously great about the whole thing and the girls have learned some valuable lessons so no harm overall hey. And the cake did you no harm either! I hope that the returns to school and work have gone well! xx

  5. What a lovely story. I didn't realise you were a teacher Jo. I can totally identify with lesson planning and marking on the holidays. Some things are the same the world over. We still have three weeks before the kids return to school after the Summer break in Australia.

  6. Wow that looks like a cake and a half. I feel a chart on the kitchen cupboard detailing the abbreviations for measurements coming on and the girls bake so often they'll soon pick it up. Well done big sis and little M for working together as a team and helping out.

  8. I once made ginger biscuits and mis-read tsp for tbs! Those biccies were so hot, you needed a glass of wine after each one to soothe the gingery pain!

  9. Priceless...I had forgotten the lovely treats my own daughters made me until your little ones prompted the reminder. I am sure you won't forget that one in a hurry.
