Hair language

My daughter has been growing her hair long - What do you do with long hair? I said to her, "Shall we put a scrunchie or a donut in it?" well, the look on her face.... I suppose if you don't know what either of those things are in hair terms it would sound a bit confusing, alarming even.

I made two scrunchies out of that school dress that had permanent felt pen on. (I cut peasant dress sleeves out of it last week!)to show her what they are. Such a satisfying thing to make rather than buy.

Then we gave the donut a try.

You make a low ponytail with a secure band. Slip over the donut- shaped-net-thingy. Then with your fingers poke around in the centre of the pony and spread the hair over the donut and quickly slip on the scrunchie.
I know it sounds like a whole new language but if you have girls give it a go...

Altogether now....oooooooh!

I'm off to make scrunchies in all colours, see ya. Jo xx

  1. Making my daughter scrunchies has been on my to do list for a while thanks for the reminder. I've never used a doughnut but that looks an easy way to use it. I've seen tutorials for using an old sock with the toes cut off instead of a doughnut, might try that.

  2. Such a good way to use old scraps of material, she looks really pretty, bless her. I make 20/30 at a time and sell them at craft fairs for £1 each out of my oddments. 9 times out of 10 it pays the rent for the stall. Have a good weekend.

  3. Her hair looks great that way, I've always wanted to try making scrunchies, a good way to use scraps too I guess!

  4. That is absolutely lovely, and artfully done. Very ballet-esque. Still laughing at imagining her horrified expression as parents really do say the oddest things (to a child's mind anyway)....!

  6. Ah, scrunchies! You're really taking me back, Jo! I love it. And the bun looks lovely. I think it's the same style we call a "sock bun" here; people actually use a baby sock to roll the hair over. It seems much more complicated than the thing you used!

  7. Oh, we know all about doughnuts since my daughter started ballet lessons... No scrunchie for us, I have to pin all the hair in place using 20 kirby grips to create a giant, shiny, perfect bun. I hate mondays. I see these kids at school with amazing french plaits and feel envious. I am not the kind of mum who can do good hair. x

  9. Jo this is just gorgeous, I am going to try this with my two little Peeps when they stay, they both have longer hair now and I am always looking for ways to keep it all tidy. A great idea as always Jo you are a font of knowledge. Have a fantastic weekend. Big hugs
