Friday fantasy quilt practise

I have now cut out 270 squares and spent a lovely evening making 30 piles of 9, evenly distributing the fabric patterns and colours between each group. I labelled them with post its and pinned them together. I had a little help there from Little M as you can see.

I used the smaller squares that did not make the cut to practise sewing seam allowances. Can you spot the two mistakes?

The second blue one on the top row is the wrong way round and I want to try and avoid two patterns next to each other because it makes a new shape (parallelogram for any maths geeks), shown on the left hand side.

I have made some notes on my design. I am going to border each set of nine squares. I had to... wait for it... buy some fabric. Yes people, buy fabric.

Then I spent an hour playing colour sudoku working out how to distribute thess fabrics over the whole bed area.

Next step sewing 9 patch squares without mistakes.

Anyone else got a quilt on the go? Last week there was a great tutorial on putting layers together on A little happy place blog.

Real work today. Happy Friday Jo xxxx

  2. I don't know, I think that you should always have one set of triangles going the other way, it could be your signature look! This looks really great and is a great way to practice and use the squares that didn't fit for your quilt! xx

  5. What fun! I do like playing with fabric. Even just getting the stash out from time to time and giving it all a quick fondle excites me. Mmmmmm, I hope I don't sound too deranged.......xx

  9. I have fabric waiting to be played with. I keep adding small amounts of lovely fabric to my stash and I am sure I could make a quilt the size of my living room if I needed to. The only thing missing is the motivation! I like your parallelogram. You could turn this into zigzag lines.... just an idea for your next one :) Have fun sewing!

  12. Love those fabrics you got! I have yet to ever quilt (or do much sewing, for that matter!), but it is on the to-do list! Brilliant idea to practice the seam allowances before you get to it, though - never seen that before, but it makes perfect sense!
Can't wait to see how this all comes together!!

  14. It's really interesting reading about your approach to the quilt. I feel like I've been playing colour sudoku with my crocheted projects for ages, it's the only way to make things work! It's going to be gorgeous. x
